Appointment of Director of Research Coordination and Promotion, Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH)

Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) has appointed Dr. Bugwesa Zablon Katale, Director of Research Coordination and Promotion effective from 8th June, 2020. Dr Katale holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Science (MUHAS), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Dr Katale is also a post doc fellow on Genomics of antimicrobial resistance with SACIDS-Africa Centre of Excellence for Infectious Diseases (SACIDS-ACE) through World Bank funding and also is a fellow with European& Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (ECTP) focused on application of whole genome sequencing in multidrug resistance (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) in Tanzania. Before joining COSTECH, Dr. Katale served as a Principal Research Officer at Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI), conducted research on TB epidemiology at humans, livestock and wildlife interface areas. He participated in an earlier phase of Wellcome Trust (WT) supported doctoral and postdoctoral research on mycobacterial infections, especially the genetic and epidemiological drivers of tuberculosis at human, livestock and wildlife in the Serengeti ecosystem and matching analysis between MDR-TB genes and clinical outcomes in TB patients in Tanzania. Prior to TAWIRI, Dr Katale was a Research Wildlife Veterinarian at TAWIRI-Messerli Foundation Wildlife Veterinary Programme. He has also served as Wildlife Veterinary Officer at Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA). Dr Katale has research experience in ecology of infectious diseases particularly tuberculosis and brucellosis at human, livestock and wildlife interface areas.
