Dr. Erasto Mbugi

Erasto MBUGI is a lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied sciences (MUHAS), School of Medicine. He holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine of Sokoine University of Agriculture specializing in Biochemistry and Molecular biology at Masters Level.

Previous Research
His previous studies have mainly been based on malaria, evaluating the genetic markers of resistance to sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and multiplicity of infections, the research that led to a Master Degree.  Erasto holds a PhD in Nutrition and Immune Capacity to Malaria focusing on effects of zinc and magnesium deficiencies on T-Cell responses and cytokine production.
Current Research

Erasto joined SACIDS (The Southern Centre for Infectious Disease Surveillance) under Welcome Trust in September 2010. His primary function as a Postdoctoral researcher is to conduct molecular studies evaluating cross-species TB transmission in the Serengeti ecosystem. His study is aimed at linking epidemiological and genetic data in generating the profile of TB strain diversity and drug resistance across the southern Africa.
